Defense Attorney Ryal Gaudiosi Passes Away

The Broward Law Blog acknowledges the passing of Ryal Gaudiosi this evening, a popular, articulate, dynamic, public defender, who fought vigorously and strenuously for his clients, often representing unpopular causes.

We express our sympathy to his family and the office he cherished working in, and all those who cherished him. A 1980 graduate of the Shepard Broad Law Center at Nova Southeastern University, Ryal was admitted to practice in the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

Ryal was a rare breed of attorneys, trying capital cases with emotion, energy, and expertise. We will follow up this story tomorrow. He is pictured here, with Susan Porter, at a Public Defender's reception last March.

  1. The county and community lost a very decent man who fought for justice with passion.
He spent over a quarter of a century at the Public Defender's Office, and the case I remember the most is one that made the NY Times 20 years ago when he fought against an inmate being required to take anti psychotic medications against his will.
Of course now I realize many years later anyone who worked in this building that long probably needs those medications.
